No, it's not.
They literally link up, combine to become a bigger monster. In later iterations this resulted in both cards flipping over to become a totally newer and more powerful card. It's basically again, that Maximum shit from Rush duel, but done much better as there's more iteration and nuance to it. It works especially will, since the God Link cards allowed you to search for the other piece. And that's just one version of that concept. DM experimented in many ways to do the "Monsters combine to become bigger monster."
DM just found ways to make it work so it actually worked and you didn't go minus for a worthless payoff like Yu-Gi-Oh did.
