Infinity Nikki's corpse is ripe for the scavenging after it shot itself, Roblox is doing HUGE numbers and is mainly set back by its horrid monetization, and Genshin's playerbase already has a pretty big overlap with Roblox and shit.
In fact, Genshin is special in that it has a roughly equal balance between adults to create good UCG games, and young children to enjoy said games. This is a way to capitalize on the playerbase's ample creative energy AND something for endgame player to do for basically forever once they run out of energy.
It's a very wild shot but it does make a lot of sense if you stop to think about it. The main thing I wonder about here is if the gamble is going to be worth it because no sane person who is interested in the UCG alone would give a shit about the genshin maingame since UCG platforms are extremely casual whereas genshin requires quite a lot of mental energy.

So you don't waste keys.
This feature is important because otherwise, you wouldn't be able to unlock echo trials for characters you don't own, which means that you could be forced to waste keys due to being unable to claim them as you flat out have nothing to use them on.
They are actively trying to avoid this by adding ways to use keys just as fast as they're adding ways to consume them.
