It feels like Gundam doesn't even want to be about mecha anymore, and certainly not mecha battles. It keeps half-heartedly pushing the action to irrelevant, obligatory side content like "school duels" or "clan bats" to get them out of the way instead of integrating them properly with the actual story and conflicts. It's getting annoying.
