it was random if you were a masher that couldn't stop mashing and getting CC'd
it was too slow and too much neutral for slug brain anisoy types
it was too "frame data" heavy for fraud 09ers who didn't mind spending 1000 hours in training mode practicing 1f links and finding 1 player game vortex setups

it was kamige for all real street fighter enjoyers

>s1 to s2
removed many throw loops and added hurtboxes to problematic normals, removed the most egregious jab AAs
>s2 to s3
fixed the input lag due to the UE4 bug, added new triggers, balanced the game more often, pretty much all loops removed by s3
>s3 to s4
increased combo scaling on CC and VTxx (this change reduced the mickeyness of the game BIGLY with loops also being gone in nearly all situations), utterly gutted jab AA again, input delay reduced even further
>s4 to s5
further balancing changes, v-skill 2 introduced, can kill characters through armor attacks

there are a bunch of other changes that i forgot about too, like adding QoL sound cues and a visual identifier for back rise and quick rise to help new players understand which meaty to use. there is reason daigo thinks that defense got too strong by the end of sfv. personally i disagree, offense and defense was balanced. the only real problems with the game by s5 were some balance issues with the top tiers, luke being way too good, and the netcode still being buggy sometimes.
