Yeah, it's easier to get into than PoE but there are some things that get new players. For one, you do need to combo most skills. Then the slowness is intentional for the beginning but picks up as you progress. One thing they failed at with 2 that they said they did well was make self finding gear possible in the campaign. It really isn't and that makes things even worse for attack builds (any skills that require a weapon) as your damage comes from weapons.
Really, I would suggest a spell build (skills that don't require a weapon) to start out as you get damage just by leveling and upgrading gems. Then try attack builds again later when you have more knowledge.
