Some guy tried to recreate it on python a while ago. He only got a half-working proof of concept out, but it had some pretty interesting stuff, like text-based animations and psd-based portraits with native support for layers.
But then he disappeared for some reason, and now the repo is dead (used to be at https://gitgud.io/Zergrush/tw-lig).

Regarding the "would a game still belong in /egg/ if it wasn't made with the era engine" topic, my opinion is that it wouldn't in most cases, but if the game were made with an engine which imitates era to the point it would be hard to distinguish from an actual eragame (like tw-lig, and unlike tohosim as referenced by >>49911117) I believe it still would deserve a place here.
