I have a 2012 SUV that I service myself for most things. The only thing I refuse to do are fluid flushes and oil filter changes since that gets messy and absorbs into your skin. Everything else I do on my own and I could not recommend it more. That knowledge is invaluable.

I had a coolant heater core hose split the other month on me and boiling hot coolant was spraying everywhere under the hood. I thought the car was fucked and I’d be up the creek for thousands, but I remained calm and assessed the issue and managed to diagnose the problem. I ordered a replacement hose and learned how to install it and everything was fixed for $40, when a mechanic probably would’ve stung me for much more. So I saved money and gained knowledge in the process.

My dealership mechanic wanted $1200 for new rotors and brake pads, but I learned how to replace those too. Cost me $100 all up, saved $1100 almost.
