The meeting in Alaska will be historic.

But no one knows yet what kind of history it will be and how historians will later describe it.

Two people who truly shape the future and have immense power will meet.

One of them is Donald Trump - President of the United States, still the largest and most powerful democratic nation in the world, a guarantor of stability and freedom.

The other one is Putin - president of Russia, the largest country in the world, a war criminal and a terrorist state leader, who is right now waging a criminal war against Ukraine and seeks to redraw the global order in his pursuit of world domination

Putin knows he will remain in power for life. He is in no hurry. Putin's primary goal, to break out of international isolation, has in many ways already been achieved: he has secured a personal meeting with the U.S. president on American soil. Putin has partially gotten what he wanted. Next, he needs to reduce or entirely stop U.S. assistance to Ukraine, and to ease or remove sanctions.

I believe it's likely that Putin will open the meeting with a long speech on "historical issues." This is his way: talk a lot, decide little, and wear his counterpart down.

Then, most likely, Putin will offer President Trump something - joint Arctic projects, joint development of rare-earth metal deposits, another meeting, a new working group on Ukraine, an "air truce," etc. - to create the impression that Putin is making concessions and progress is being made, while in reality offering nothing of substance.
