Mario World is the better game, though, it has more refined gameplay, way, way more stages, and greater replay value. Mario's formula had already been perfected with Super Mario Bros. 3, while Sonic the Hedgehog (a good game as well) was SEGA's first Sonic attempt.

I miss the SEGA × Nintendo days, it's such a shame SEGA left the hardware business and Nintendo was forced out of the main console market and only make companion platforms / handhelds now to avoid competing with PlayStation and Xbox.
