That is an interesting idea, keep any of the earth entrances shut down forever.
They have entire countries along the real earth form: through tunnels they can travel to lands beyond the ice walls, where the sun do not circulate.

Constantly shutting them down and flooding them when they try to scape would be excellent idea why not.
