I think most people are basically good, and it's individualism (selfishness) that brings out the worst in them. "Good" is basically care for other people. The problem with liberalism is the utopian delusion that you can or should extend this to literally all other people equally, which is unfeasible; there are, have always, and will always be cleavages in the human population such universalism in practice just means undermining your own group for the sake of others who would never extend the same courtesy to you, which constitutes traitorousness. It is no coincidence that liberalism simultaneously espouses universalism and individualism, because saying "everyone is in my in-group!" is effectively the same thing as saying "no one is in my in-group"
