Then when we finally see the place and spend a few episodes there, Shirase feels unfulfilled as she hasn't yet been able to find her real reason for going, which was closure. At this point we are in love with the characters, we know what's coming, we're told directly by the captain what's coming, but it doesn't matter. The moment needs to happen for the healing to begin. And when she finds that laptop and logs in, and her emails start pouring in, a dozen, a hundred, a thousand, there is nowhere left to run. Finally we and Shirase are faced with the reality that her mom died in Antarctica years ago. It falls on us like a weight and there is nothing we can say besides that single word. And her new friends just outside, sharing in her pain. We feel it from Shirase's, from her friends, and from our perspectives all at once. That's why it's so powerful. And what's even more powerful is her smile the next day. After finally facing the immense pain, she can move forward with a true purpose that looks into the future instead of the past. She can heal and grow.
