It's the 50s that are a bit thinner and more jangly. And anything modeled after them. That sound got popular again in the 80s too. 60s pups had a tougher midrange and what you hear in Jimi or Ritchie or a great number of rock guys.
Also, Gibson guys sometimes used them just like Jimmy and his Tele. Joe Perry recorded a lot on a Strat, even though he's associated with the Les Paul. Dream On, Walk This Way, apparently a lot of the Rocks album were Strats.
