>The Italian company Leonardo has successfully conducted open-sea trials of its new autonomous system MEP (Maritime Mission Equipment Package), designed to protect ships from drones. The MEP system is based on a modular open architecture. It is equipped with a passive radio-frequency sensor that can detect drones by their control signals, as well as an electro-optical system for precise visual tracking. All data streams are processed by an AI-powered core, which enables the system to distinguish and classify targets in order to prioritize their neutralization. The system supports both non-kinetic countermeasures (electronic jamming and GPS spoofing) and kinetic methods (small missiles or interceptor drones). Reports state that during the trials, MEP demonstrated a full kill chain — from signal detection to classification and destruction of targets — while also maintaining situational awareness under real maritime conditions.
