This was sort of the point of Gammamon: the Gulus line WAS his original form, and it was Hiro's influence that resulted in the more benign forms. Of course, Gammamon was already innocent himself, so it didn't really play out that way episode to episode.

Guilmon was an earlier attempt at this, and the original plans for Impmon also point to them wanting to do something like this back then. Having an actual problem child Digimon that the MC would struggle to rein in. But for perhaps obvious reasons, it got both toned down and turned into the more marketable red dino partner who has a blood lust problem but is otherwise an okay mon.
