Finally finished IBO.
Here are my thoughts.
For my own personal experience, I think the show was great. It was very enjoyable to watch and I found myself really captivated during the last 3 episodes. I think S2 was a bit better than S1 due to pacing.
When it comes to specific story or character stuff, this is what I think. Spoilers ahead.
I think this is a story Tomino would have maybe liked. Sure it has cool robots, but the core of the show is about politics, child soldiers, freedom, and it has a classic Kill 'Em All Tomino ending. However, I do think this ending was hopeful too, despite much of the main cast dying. Which is maybe a bit ironic, since the classic shows and CCA all end on a bit of a downer note with the characters looking forward to a better tomorrow, but in this show that tomorrow is realized and the main crew didn't die for nothing..
I also think McGillis and Gaelio were a wonderful take on the Char and Garma dynamic. It felt like a more fleshed out version of that dynamic, which was a friend trying in vain to shed his feelings in order to obtain a political goal..
I also think that it's a bit ironic, Rustal and McGillis. Rustal kind of put forth the kind of world McGillis wanted, and I almost wonder if they could have worked together. Or if they were both too stubborn and blinded by power to do that. But, like Tekkadan, the world McGillis wanted happened after his death..
I think if the show had a "message" or whatever, it'd be war bad, friends good, political independence good.
So despite having the typical Federation faction win, Spacenoids in this show did get independence, kind of touching back.
I think this show touched on a lot of UC themes, like the alaya vijnana being similar to being a Newtype, and handled them in a really enjoyable piece of animation.
