Regarding your points on theft and wealth, while you're correct that most of the wealth went to the powerful elite, the subjects still got a slice of the pie, however small that might be.

If I'm the inhabitant of a town that is home to bank robbers and own a jewelery store that the robbers spend their money at, I still benefit from their crimes.
