Americans stuck with Imperial for a longer time than most countries because its convenient for industry. Half-inches and such make a lot of sense as sizes for wrenches and pipes.
The downside is that America has little manufacturing today (recent months has bled tens of thousands of the few remaining manufacturing jobs) and Imperial is way worse for scientific calculations.
Tough deal really.
