You're missing the point. You don't understand Sonic's character. Or Surge's character, for that matter.
Surge isn't becoming a hero. She's driven by a selfish need for validation and revenge against Starline. She doesn't fight for justice or freedom, she fights for herself. Liking the "idea" of being a hero is just another facet of her ego. It's hedonism.
Sonic is an ideal. He's like the wind. An incorruptible force of good who pursues the happiness of himself and all life. He inspires people like Tails and Amy to be better. He doesn't exist to fix broken people who are obsessed with him. That's not heroism, it's a bad fanfic.
People who dislike the ship don't want conflict, they just have a better grasp on the characters than you do. Surge is a victim, fine. That doesn't make her a hero. Her motivations are rotten. She doesn't want to be good, she wants to win. There is a difference. A very real difference.
Surge will only be happy when the people sing her praises.
Sonic will be happy when he has a quiet day to read a book, take a nap, and go on a jog to a new city.
