I actually enjoyed the gameplay a lot. Despite what people say this game isn’t really linear there are plenty of locations you can explore to unlock new abilities. Most of these areas have enemies with unique mechanics and they drop good stuff like how you can get Solidify from the Wall Crusher boss, or that ability from the Chaperone that gives you shields on death.
Some of the optional areas are surprisingly long too Frozen Hearts was one of my favorites I went there way too early and ended up getting overpowered pretty fast, regular enemies also had some mechanics there, like switching between fire and ice stances and then triggering those corresponding stance orbs to nuke them, there’s the scavenger boss at falling leaves which was also quite annoying he kept disappearing etc.
When it comes to class fantasy and turn based mechanics I still think nothing tops bravely default I enjoyed that a lot.
But this was a nice take on the usual formula. Not gonna lie some of those windups when getting attacked gave me Elden Ring ptsd not sure I was even playing a turn based game at that point
