People seem to think the Japanese don't have lowest common denominator consumers for some reason when they absolutely do, just with variants from western counterparts (Dragon Quest's spots in a western list would probably be 7th gen shooters and BG3). A lot of the coolest games out of Japan are made for enthusiasts (read: otaku) and mid-range western audiences.
