Its really not. The movies were hits and werent utter embarassments like the most recent mario movie but Sonic was way bigger when Sonic Adventure 2 Battle came out. It had a lot of new stuff people were happy to see and obsess over.

Now its just an IP people are used to getting seen fucked over like Megaman and Digimon.
