I've tried low poly PS1 style, flat color, 'schizo-core', FF7 vertex color style (requires a high degree of mesh modelling skill), texturing with flat projection like Quake, sculpting and baking into low poly, basically everything
the inconvenient truth seems to be that unless you're a good artist and can texture, you're boned
recently I've been trying a method of sculpting with very low poly objects, like a cube that's been subdivided by 1 with smoothness set to 1 (not the subdiv modifier) but that rarely works
