Even letting him get that close is stupid, it's how you can tell someone doesn't know how to fight. People who can actually fight know how stupid it is to square up to someone like that because if the person you're squaring up on throws a punch you won't see it in time to move before you catch a hook to the jaw or temple because his hands are out of your field of view.
Protip, look at someone's chest if you think someone is going to try and hit you, not their eyes. That way it puts their hands in your field of view and you can react if they try to throw a punch.
