In the before times, the world was savage and unforgiving. You had to carry quarters in case you had to make a phonecall using a public phone/phonebooth because cellphones were expensive as fuck and came in a suitcase. If you wanted to socialize you would have to go out of your place to meet and talk to people. You could only watch movies in cinemas/drive-ins, and if you missed when a tv show was airing, you were fucked.

Then the internet was born.

But in the ancient times embedding video in web pages was a shitshow. Youtube did not exist. The Great Browser Wars were raging: AOL Explorer, Netscape, Internet Explorer required plug-ins like RealPlayer, Quicktime and other fuck-ass bullshit that didn't work half the time with your computer/browser combo.

Internet speed was an issue. It might take six hours to download some 2 meg video over your modem connection, and if somebody picked up the phone you were fucked. Once you open the download you found out it was a Rickroll. And internet was expensive as fuck.

This is where the GIF format came in. It was supported by most browsers, so it became the way to post "videos" in forums/message boards.

Back in the day /gif was the board to post animated gifs, which meant all kinds of threads were made. Sports, anime, furries, cooking, rekt, traps, anything went because /gif was were animation/videos could be posted. You never knew what you might see when you visited /gif in these primitive times.

Once webms came into play, over time /gif became mostly a porn board.

/sfw was created, but there is one big issue: it's a blue board. If you don't know what that means, fuck off.

So /gif is still the one place where rekt/gore content can be posted.
