I wasn't a believer either, but then I tried the bugeye path.
The greatest advantage of the bugeye path is instantly getting access to the bugeyes themselves.

You now have an army of dedicated psychics on Y1 while people are still struggling to build their first few on Y3. If you have abused mind control before, you'll know how cheesy it is.
