The Byzantine Empire, except for Constantinople, had lost almost all its territory and was reduced to a city-state, while the Balkans were populated by tiny countries with less than a million people. Hungary, the most populous, barely had 2 million in the 1400s. If there had been a country in the Balkans like Western Europe, with 10+ million people and cohesive territory, the Ottomans would never have been able to advance beyond Constantinople. For example, the Ottoman Empire’s territory was several times larger than France, but its population was roughly equal. Don’t act like a conquering a few tiny city-states of a few hundred thousand made you a great empire
