Your explanation doesn't make sense for animated NPs specifically because it could be applied to all art in general and doesn't impact the ability to animate the sprite.
If you're going to explain why it's "lazy" at least use the correct explanation. The reason front facing is used for animated NPs specifically is because a front facing shot can retain scaling and look correct at any distance, but an angled shot needs a bit more work to make a still image move and look natural.
This is also why most 2D sprite based fighters did similar and why high detail 3D movement (like Nu-13's astral finish in BlazBlue) stands out so much even in recent years with the use of rotoscoping.
