You're all NPCs. The people who put on the headsets aren't there. They put them on, the headsets scanned their brains and created exact replicas of their minds and created characters that are controlled by said replicas. The actual people who put on the headsets aren't there though, they're not even aware that there's a copy of them trapped in the Digital Circus.
It's why there's no escape. You're not actual people, you're simulations. There's no headset to take off. No real world to go back to. It's also why you "abstract." I mean why would that happen if you were real people? It makes no sense. Like, how would it manifest in the real world? No, "abstraction" happens because you're simulations and you glitch out because whatever machine is running you can't handle that kind of emotional breakdown.
