See pic. We had images like this in elementary schools in the 90s and early 2000s. We learned that we were lucky to be born in Scandinavia. And we were told how unlucky people were in Africa and the Middle East. We were told that we could save them.
Combine this with decades of anti-racism. Anyone who ever said anything realistic about race or culture were shut down immediately.

Having lived in literal paradise up here in the north for several decades, we've become incredibly naive and sheltered. This is our reality check.
