One thing worth thinking about is that in quantum mechanics the double slit experiment shows that atoms change their behaviour when viewed by a conscious being, so this suggests things in the world/universe would be different if consciousness /sentient beings did not exist. So some people believe consciousness is needed in the universe so it can be observed and that's why life is able to evolve, not by chance but because it has to so sentient beings can come to being and observe the universe and say "yes the universe is real". There's some Through The Wormhole episodes which explain it better.

And if consciousness is energy and energy only transfers never just disappears this could suggest that there is some electromagnetic spectrum where consciousness could live on outside the human mind as it has be proven that thoughts can travel between minds through the electromagnetic spectrum. Like animals use the earth's magnetic field to navigate, what if consciousness dissipated into this field after death? This is not my belief but just a random theory/thought process, seeing as we have no understanding why existence exists in the first place. just some interesting things to think about.
