You know a spear is just a staff with a knife on the end right? Its perfectly viable to smack people with it, especially omi-yari which had long short-sword like blades. That said I would have preferred a naginata, which should have been in the first game considering its time period. Also she handles the odachi with some control and speed, definitely not like a slab of iron.
