Putin wants to take photos with President Trump and delay sanctions - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas on the meeting in Alaska.
Kaja Kallas stated that Putin is not showing readiness for meaningful negotiations with President Trump in Alaska.
She emphasized that real negotiations are only possible with the participation of President Zelenskyy, since the war is between Russia and Ukraine. The absence of the Ukrainian leader at the meeting indicates Putin’s unwillingness to achieve peace.
Kallas also added that the United States has leverage over Putin, but these levers must be used wisely.
"Of course, we hope for that, because the US clearly has leverage over Russia. This is evident from the fact that Putin is now sitting at the negotiating table, but it is clear what Putin wants. He wants the opportunity to be photographed with President Trump, the most influential person on earth, and then he wants to delay the threat of sanctions, to pretend he is negotiating, so that the threat will no longer exist. The outcome must be an unconditional ceasefire so that real negotiations can begin - negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
President Zelenskyy must be part of the meeting. It is obvious that Putin does not want him there. Why? Because he is not serious about any peace talks. If he were serious, he would want to talk directly with Zelenskyy, because the war is happening in Ukraine, between Russia and Ukraine. So, to achieve any results or real negotiations, talks must be held with those affected - namely Ukraine and President Zelenskyy," she said in an interview with Suspilne.
Kaja Kallas also stressed that the West must "pressure the aggressor to make concessions he has not yet made" and that "all pressure must be directed at the aggressor, not the victim."
