Comparing the master of free verse to the vast majority of boring contemporary poets is a little silly, no?
Robinson Jeffers is interesting because he uses long, rough lines of verse that mimic environment. Almost as if the lines themselves are a stenciled outline of the landscape he’s trying to evoke. Free verse is only compelling if there’s a purpose behind it: are you doing free verse because your exacting vision requires it? Or is it just out of laziness?
Whitman had vision. Jeffers had vision. But the vast majority of these modern “poets” seem to lack it….and I don’t fault OP or anyone else for being disdainful of that.
