Luc Montagnier, who earned his nobel prize by "discovering" HIV later said his approach was deeply flawed and that the follow-up attempts to isolate HIV had failed. To this day, HIV has never been isolated in a lab.
There is no hard evidence HIV exists. AIDs is indeed a syndrome, but its relationship with 'HIV' is unproven and is more likely a result of lifestyle and overall immune degradation from environmental factors.

The interesting angle to this dilemma is exposed by asking; if HIV hasn't been isolated, is that due to biochemical reasons (HIV is not a standard retrovirus and cannot be isolated with normal procedures) or due to institutional pressures (any attempt to isolate the 'virus' is stymied.) These conclusions lean towards the idea that AIDs is caused by a combination of viral vectors, some of which are not recognized.
