After a date he was walking home when a couple a black guys started to approach him. He didn't want to seem a like racist, so he didn't cross the street or anything to avoid him. They ended up beating the shit out of him (fracturing his skull) and putting a gun to his head. Ultimately they left him for dead.
It deals with him getting writer's block from the incident. In his head, all of the Batman villains personify personal failings of Dini. While Batman has to drag Dini out of depression and inceldom.
