I don't think it's specifically due to popularity, but rather because of no barriers convenience
Things can get popular if the majority who's willing to join is interesting in learning the thing in-depth, having respect for the culture and seeking knowledge
The problem is that nowadays they want to make everything convenient for retards, so they learn it without really joining the culture or being transformed by the knowledge, just taking things superficially
Plus there's these people who don't really like knowledge or technology at all, who are just here to fulfill some unrelated purpose like pretending to participate in politics, rant about their personal problems, brand wars and so on
