My headcanon since the WCI flashback is Blackbeard ate Whitebeard's heart. Hearts are where the soul is stored as seen by Law's personality transplant. And in the WCI flashback we saw Big Mom get Caramel's powers by eating her (implied). Given the hole in Whitebeard's chest maybe Blackbeard just ripped it the fuck out and ate it.
