Death Toll in Russian Tram Crash Rises to Five
The death toll from a tram derailment in the Russian city of Tula has risen to five after another victim died in the hospital, health officials reported on Saturday.
The incident occurred on Friday morning on the Proletarsky Bridge in Tula, a city south of Moscow. According to preliminary information from investigators, a tram car derailed due to a track defect, veered into oncoming traffic, and collided with two minibuses and two cars.
Initially, four people were reported dead at the scene, with over 20 injured. The regional Ministry of Health confirmed the fifth death on Saturday, adding that ten people remain hospitalized, with four in serious condition.
Russia's Investigative Committee has launched a criminal case into the incident on charges of providing services that do not meet safety standards, resulting in multiple deaths. Local media reported that residents had raised concerns about the state of the tram tracks on the bridge just two days before the fatal crash, leading to temporary emergency repairs. The Tula city administration stated that the tram involved had passed a technical inspection and was in good working order before its run.
