except it was. there were still people who complained about it, for sure. but the overwhelming response for 40K, the first full set/product (as in no a secret lair or alt art treatment like godzilla), was that it could have been much worse and at least they did it with something that has a semi-similar aesthetic and is probably something that a lot of players are already into (seeing as a lot of tcg players are also tabletop gamers as well). sure, it is more sci-fi than magic had really been at that point, but they were already starting to push the boundaries with neon dynasty cyberpunk aesthetics (probably also testing the waters there because they already had an idea from market research surveys about how players feel about UB aesthetics clashing with UW aesthetics and wanted to test with NEO to see how players would respond to a shift in magic's aesthetics that allow for a broader range of IPs that won't clash with that aesthetic).
