When the characters trivialize the game having to use random operators along with additional difficulty modifiers does make it more fun for me again. Of course with just some self control I can utilize nichesquads like kotknights or something but having it gamified helps and the occasional temp recruit gets me to give Fartooth or somebody a whirl. I think more events where the objective can't be bruteforced with DPS like Hortus would be fun but I know the majority doesn't enjoy that.
