I usually say something like:

Then I add a bullet point list of stuff I want for the character: name, occupation, personality, etc. For the author I usually use a guy who wrote one of my favorite series as a kid (Jonathan Stroud), but I've also done some of the classics: C. S. Lewis, H. P. Lovecraft, etc. Dunno if this is the best way to do any of this, but it works for me.

It seems a little harder to get scalies than furries, but I haven't tried that much. Also, I have quandaries about how hair should work for scalies
