The thing is, being attracted to someone because "I find their appearance attractive, I find their personality attractive" isn't really enough, and oddly enough it's even more offensive if you humanize them *too much* and have them emotionally connect with a character while also in a sexual context.
What they seek is dictations of value, setting a hierarchy. Saying "this character is lesser, this character gets beaten by this character", setting up top and bottom, alpha and omega dominance dynamics. It's more about setting absolute inflexible roles, that aren't exactly about interest, but are about the demonstration of value. But you know, these hierarchies and roles are still set entirely by superficial qualities.
