However, I think the apex would be a fully dark version that was never entirely realized. Something like vista, without the light elements, or OSX's Quicktime.

Better than flat, definitely. Add some gloss elements to those sunk buttons, some reflections in the round bits, and it's not bad. Ultimately though, the design will be whatever is easier for indians to do.
