I'm not saying that it isn't good to be creative with your visual presentation.
But restraint, pacing and considered thought can be just as important to the quality of a film. Just splotching red all over the scene and calling it symbolism without prior visual or directional setup is just lazy.
Even wildy innovative surrealistic stuff like Hundreds of Beavers has a lot of thought put into it, and that's what separates actual quality from amateur (but admirable) attempts.
