It's because of the split-controller multiplayer concept.

Holding a controller with a noticeable grip-curve sideways would not be as comfortable for a lot of people compared to a uniform slab of plastic. There are dozens of cases that alter the form factor at this point if it bothers you.

I just bought the one from dbrand about a week ago, hoping it's good. Might be a little overpriced but I appreciate the fact that it still allows me to still detach the controllers unlike other offerings.
