Better foundation, worse execution.
Once again, needs the DLC expansion to save it's sorry ass. Omega is a gemstone in a pile of slag (though, not a pile of shit).
Make sure you've got the hardware to run it, it's unapologetically next gen; and as much flak as it gets, having gone back to World with the HD texture pack, Wilds does look noticeably better.
Story is alright but let down by a single character somehow more insufferable then the Handler (+skippable cutscenes in exchange for unskippable walking segments), ecology is alright but lacking (it feels like everything is relative to the villages, rather than a natural world that the villages have adapted to), maps are alright but all of them except Scarlet Forest have a definite flaw (Plains is a load of empty space that doesn't even get used, Basin has no Monsters and they're all in the same areas, Cliffs is cramped and Ruins is linear; lots of "shortcuts" on all of them are slower than just chasing the monster), monster designs are great (even if there's more Leviathans than Tri with none of the underwater, and the flagship is fartcat-tier nohype) but their fights are so easy with the tools you're given that even 9* Ultra-hard versions are pushovers (only the postgame fights are worth a damn), sound design is great, weapons are generally good iterations of themselves (even if definitely overtuned across the board).
tl;dr wait for the DLC, then lightly mod it, same as World.
