Is it worthwhile to digress for a moment regarding Brother Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli? Of course. After many years of rumors about his membership in the Masonic world, Freemasons finally offers some details. The "Good Pope" received his first Masonic initiation in Istanbul in 1940 at the Ur- Lodge "Ghedullah," then as now passionately committed to the study of Kabbalah and the Rosicrucian tradition. In the archives of the "Ghedullah"—and Magaldi swears he consulted them—there is still extensive documentation about his affiliation as an apprentice, as well as his progression through the degrees to Fellow Craft and, later, in 1943, to Master Mason. And not only that. Roncalli, who arrived in Paris in 1944 as apostolic nuncio, received a second initiation in 1949 at the highly militant progressive Ur-Lodge "Montesquieu," which recognized his fourth degree as Master Legislator. Still not satisfied, thanks to the mediation of the brothers of the "Ghedullah" who maintained contact with the "Ioannes," another supranational Ur-Lodge, he was officially initiated as a Rosicrucian brother in 1950.
