My own way of doing it is matching the preset I have, which in my case it has a part where it says something on the lines of "you will only control {{char}} and NPCs" and uses XML tags for sections.
So I define them as NPCs on the card itself while wrapping each one as if they were their own character. Picrel for a personal card that merges the four princesses in a single one and had gone well for my purposes.
