I will agree, at least, that story gets way too obsessed with the original cast in the latter half of the show, and was much better off when it was about Machu and Nyaan on Side 6, a civilian teen perspective of this alt-timeline cold war. That's the problem, not the references themselves.

You'll forgive me if I don't give a shit about Hathaway. The character, not the movie. He's a wishy-washy nerd obsessed with a dead character that literally nobody likes. Him being Bright's son does nothing for me.
And the first movie kinda spoiled my interest in the second. The first scene was good, the F91-like scene was good, but the rest was just sorta okay.
